Why is a solar battery useful?
A solar battery stores surplus solar electricity for use later in the day, increasing self-consumption and reducing the amount of expensive grid electricity purchased. Depending on consumption and system design, this can substantially improve independence and profitability. Batteries are available for new and existing systems, but their size and compatibility with the inverter should be planned carefully.
How do I choose the right battery size for my solar system?
As a practical starting point, battery capacity in kWh should be at least similar to the inverter’s rated output in kW. An 8 kW hybrid inverter would therefore be paired with at least about 8 kWh of storage. A larger battery, potentially around a 2:1 ratio, can make better use of solar surpluses and reduce battery loading. The optimum size also depends on annual consumption, load profile and available solar generation.
What is the difference between low-voltage and high-voltage battery systems?
Low-voltage batteries typically operate at about 48 V. They are widely used, can be cost-effective and are easy to scale with suitable cabling. High-voltage batteries start at roughly 120 V and can transmit power with lower currents and smaller cable cross-sections, which is useful for larger systems. They are usually connected in series and require a compatible external battery management system. The correct choice depends on system size and inverter compatibility.
Can I expand my solar battery?
Yes, many solar battery systems are modular and can be expanded. Depending on the manufacturer, modules can form battery groups of roughly 12 to 30 kWh, and identical groups can sometimes be connected in parallel using a hub or distributor. Compatibility, module age, state of charge, battery management and inverter capacity must all be checked before expansion.

How safe are LiFePO4 solar batteries?
LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries are considered particularly safe among lithium battery technologies. They have high thermal stability, a low risk of thermal runaway, a robust chemical structure and a long service life. A suitable battery management system, correct installation and compliance with the manufacturer’s instructions remain essential.
Can problems occur when expanding a solar battery?
Yes. New battery modules often arrive with a state of charge of around 40–60%, while the existing battery may be fully charged or discharged. Connecting modules at different charge levels can create imbalance, reduce performance or cause faults. The new and existing modules should therefore be brought to the same state of charge before they are combined.
Why should battery capacity in kWh be twice the inverter rating in kW?
A larger battery can absorb high charging power more comfortably and provide useful reserves for evenings, poor-weather periods and the transitional seasons. In practice, a 2:1 ratio between battery capacity in kWh and inverter rating in kW can work efficiently. A 1:1 ratio is also possible for cost reasons, but very small batteries can be exposed to higher loads and may not store all available surplus energy.
Is a solar battery worth buying?
A solar battery can be worthwhile when it significantly increases self-consumption and reduces purchases of expensive grid electricity. It supplies stored solar power in the evening or during cloudy periods and improves independence from future electricity-price increases. Profitability depends on the battery price, usable capacity, household consumption, electricity tariff, solar yield and expected service life.
