How does a solar fence work?

A solar fence uses vertically installed bifacial glass-glass modules that convert light on both sides into electricity. With an east-west orientation, it produces particularly well in the morning and evening, when household demand is often higher. It also serves as a boundary and privacy screen.

How much energy does a solar fence generate?

Depending on location and orientation, yields of up to 1,200 kWh per kWp and year are possible. In bright surroundings, such as snow-covered ground, the albedo effect can increase this to as much as 1,300 kWh. Winter yield remains comparatively stable because snow does not settle on the vertical modules and the low sun reaches them favourably.

Does a solar fence have to face the sun?

No. Because the modules are light-sensitive on both sides, a solar fence can work with different orientations. East-west is common and produces an output profile focused on mornings and evenings. Other orientations can also achieve good yields; the local conditions are decisive.

What is the difference between the premium and standard versions?

The premium version prioritises design, using square profiles that are galvanised or powder-coated in anthracite (RAL 7016), with heights up to 2.50 m. It is intended for homes and representative properties. The standard version is robust and material-efficient, supports heights up to 3 m, two module rows and terrain slopes up to 11°, making it suitable for commercial and agricultural use.

Which foundations and mounting options are available?

The premium solar fence can be installed on a wall, between wall elements or in grassland using concrete point foundations. The standard version normally uses driven steel profiles, although concrete foundations are also possible. The gap at ground level can optionally be closed with perforated sheet, aluminium panels or mesh fencing.

How much does a solar fence cost?

Costs depend on length, version and foundations. A rough guide is about €250 per metre plus installation and electrical materials. Depending on self-consumption, the generated electricity can allow the additional solar investment to pay back in around eight years.

Do I need planning permission for a solar fence?

Requirements differ between German federal states and municipalities. Fences up to a certain height are often exempt from formal approval, but local development plans can specify height and design. Is a solar fence suitable for agriculture?

Yes. Used as a pasture fence, it contains animals, provides a privacy barrier against predators and creates shade while generating electricity for the farm. Insulators for electric fencing can be attached to the standard version, and the ground gap can be closed with mesh panels for smaller animals.

How durable are the frame and modules?

The frame design originates from solar-power-plant construction and is engineered for high wind loads and a long service life. Next2Sun provides warranties of up to 30 years for the bifacial glass-glass modules and 10 years for the frame. The system is weather-resistant and requires little maintenance.

Can I install the solar fence myself?

Yes. The modular system is designed for self-installation: prepare the foundations, assemble the frame and mount the modules. The electrical connection must be completed by a qualified electrician. Technical support is also available from planning through commissioning.
