When Older Feed-In Support Ends, Your Own Solar Power Becomes More Valuable

Many German agricultural solar systems installed in the early 2000s are now reaching the end of their 20-year EEG support period. The historically high guaranteed feed-in tariffs then expire, while remuneration for newly exported electricity is much lower.

Self-generated electricity can remain valuable when it is used directly on the farm. Battery storage lets you keep daytime solar energy for later use. With a compatible energy-management system and a dynamic electricity tariff, the battery can also charge during low-price periods and reduce grid purchases during expensive hours.

The concept scales from a retrofit battery alongside an existing solar system to large installations with several hundred kilowatt-hours of storage for businesses with high consumption.

Why Battery Storage Can Be Especially Useful on a Farm

Electricity Around the Clock

Milking, cooling, ventilation, heating and other loads can run day and night, often creating a stronger match between generation and consumption than in a typical home.

Large Roof Areas

Barns and agricultural buildings can generate more solar electricity during the day than is needed immediately. A battery stores part of that surplus for later use.

Backup Power for Critical Equipment

Power cuts can affect milking, ventilation, cooling and control systems. A correctly designed backup-capable storage system can keep selected loads supplied.

Potential Tax Advantages in Germany

Depending on the business and investment, §7g EStG can allow an investment deduction of up to 50% of expected eligible costs when the statutory conditions are met, including almost exclusive business use. Obtain tax advice for your individual case.

Three Routes to the Right Storage System

The right solution depends on your grid connection, consumption profile and existing solar installation. The existing solar inverter can often remain in place, but it does not have to.

Route 1 · up to approx. 20 kWp

Retrofit or Build New – Victron

The existing solar installation can continue operating. An AC-coupled Victron battery inverter/charger and battery are added alongside it. The same architecture can also be used for new systems, with backup-power capability and modular expansion.

Route 2 · dynamic tariff

Increase Flexibility – Hybrid Systems

Compatible hybrid systems from manufacturers such as Solis or SolaX can coordinate solar generation, battery charging and selected dynamic-tariff strategies. The exact functions depend on the inverter, battery, tariff and energy-management setup.

Route 3 · larger connection

Large Systems – 200+ kWh Possible

Higher consumption requires more storage and power. The available grid connection must match charging and discharging requirements; larger projects can require reinforcement, a new connection or a transformer in coordination with the grid operator.

Find the Right Route

Economics & Technical Requirements

Storage cost depends strongly on capacity, power, installation and project scope. The guide values below are from the German source as of August 2026 and are not binding quotations. Profitability must be calculated from the actual load profile, tariff, solar generation and investment cost.

Guide Investment per kWh

Retrofit storage 10–30 kWh: approx. €600–900/kWh.
Commercial storage from 100 kWh: approx. €400–600/kWh.
Large storage from 500 kWh: approx. €300–500/kWh.
Larger systems can reduce the cost per kWh.

Where Savings Can Come From

Higher solar self-consumption.
Peak-load reduction where demand charges apply.
Dynamic-tariff optimisation with compatible equipment.
Actual payback varies by project and is not guaranteed.

Grid Connection

Smaller AC-coupled retrofit systems can often use the existing connection. Larger three-phase storage systems require a grid connection sized for their charging and discharging power. Very large projects can require connection reinforcement or a dedicated transformer.

Space & Technology

Small and medium systems are normally installed in a suitable dry technical area or cabinet; larger systems can use outdoor cabinets or container solutions. Fire protection, local electrical requirements and grid-connection approval become increasingly important as system size grows.

What Matters for Agricultural Battery Storage

Backup Power & Black Start
Choose a system architecture that can automatically switch to backup operation and, where required, restart independently after a grid failure. Capabilities vary by product.
Modular Expansion
A modular system can grow with the farm, provided the battery generation, BMS, inverter and expansion rules remain compatible.
High Cycle Life
LFP battery chemistry is widely used for systems with regular cycling. Compare manufacturer warranties, usable capacity and permitted operating conditions.
Suitable Installation Location
Follow the manufacturer’s temperature, moisture, dust, clearance and fire-safety requirements for the exact system.
Prioritised Backup Loads
Critical loads such as milking, cooling or ventilation can be placed on appropriately designed backup circuits so storage capacity is used where it matters most.

Funding & Tax Considerations in Germany

For eligible investments, §7g EStG can permit an investment deduction of up to 50% of expected acquisition or production costs. The asset must meet the statutory conditions, including being used exclusively or almost exclusively for business purposes during the required period; German tax guidance treats this as at least 90% business use. Eligibility also depends on further business and investment conditions. This is not tax advice—have your individual situation checked by a tax adviser. Financing and regional support programmes can also change over time.
