In the world of PV modules, besides the quality of manufacturing, innovations and technologies are crucial for efficient and powerful solar solutions. Here are some key terms that will help you understand the latest developments in photovoltaics.

TopCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) is an advanced technology used in solar cells to increase efficiency. By integrating an ultra-thin oxide layer between the silicon and the contacts of the solar cell, electronic loss is minimized. This leads to higher energy yield and makes TopCon solar modules highly efficient. However, TopCon cells do not interact well with all materials in a module unless they have been thoroughly tested and carefully selected beforehand. A perfect example of quality is the German company Heckert Solar. Heckert has tested materials for nearly a year while Chinese companies had already launched modules with TopCon cells on the market - with a very high failure rate.

Glass Glass solar modules are particularly durable and reliable due to their two layers of glass and the welded solar cells and films in between. They offer enhanced protection against environmental influences such as hail, snow, and strong winds. This robustness makes them particularly suitable for demanding climates and guarantees a longer lifespan of the module. Some glass glass modules also allow for aesthetically pleasing integration into buildings and other structures, making them ideal for architectural applications.

Glass glass modules are, however, more expensive and heavier than glass film modules and therefore may adversely affect the building's structure. Considering that good solar modules already have a lifespan of 40 years and hardly age, it is worth considering whether a potentially even longer-lasting glass glass solar module is necessary.

Bifacial modules can capture and convert light from both sides. These cells are particularly effective in environments where reflective light (for example, from snow, water, or bright roof surfaces) can be utilized. When buying bifacial modules, they increase the overall energy yield of the system by using not only direct sunlight but also reflected light.

N-Type modules vs. P-Type modules: Both types of silicon are used in the manufacture of solar cells. N-Type solar panels offer higher efficiency and perform better at high temperatures. P-Type cells, on the other hand, are less expensive to produce and still prevalent in today's solar modules. Also, N-Type modules tend to age faster in the first months and years compared to P-Type solar panels.

PERC (Passivated Emitter Rear Cell) is a technology that enhances the efficiency of traditional solar cells. It adds a passivation layer on the back of the cell, which helps to better utilize incoming light by preventing light rays from simply being reflected back out. This leads to higher efficiency of the solar cell.

PV Modules Full Black or with a black frame are popular due to their aesthetic elegance. However, the efficiency suffers by 0.5 to 1% because a black film absorbs more light, reducing the performance of the solar module. Fully black modules look particularly noble and chic, so some people are willing to accept this slight loss in performance and the associated slightly higher price. They are especially attractive for residential buildings where appearance matters.

Monocrystalline solar modules are known for their high efficiency and slim, uniform appearance with a small square in the middle. These modules are drawn from a single, continuous silicon crystal around a thread and aligned accordingly. They provide excellent performance, even in areas with less sunlight.

Their slightly higher efficiency compared to polycrystalline solar panels has led almost all manufacturers to exclusively produce monocrystalline solar panels. As a standard, they are an ideal choice for areas with limited space because they generate more energy per square meter, especially compared to thin-film modules. Additionally, monocrystalline modules have a dark color and uniform texture, making them visually appealing.

The efficiency of solar modules is a crucial feature that measures how well a solar module can convert sunlight into usable electricity relative to its area. A higher efficiency means more energy produced per same area compared to a module with lower efficiency.

However, the yield per purchased and installed kWp of performance is fundamentally the same. This is particularly important in regions with fewer sunlight hours or where space for solar modules is limited. Investing in highly effective solar modules allows you to install more power on your area. The dimensions of a module also play a crucial role. For instance, a solar module that is 5 cm shorter could lead to an additional row of modules on your roof, which would maximize energy production and further shorten the payback time of your solar investment.
